And last but not least, some recent survey work by Book Marketing Limited indicates that people value pricing and discounting above pretty much everything else. Given the climate, not a huge surprise!

Not a huge surprise on discounts, no. I buy a lot of books but rarely at full price; I wait until they’re discounted. I couldn’t afford them otherwise.

Also must say, I’ve never read a R&J recommendation that I liked!

For some reason I read Barry O’Callaghan but thought ‘Barry Cunningham’. For a moment, I was very upset!

Re: discounting. S’funny, lots of our customers like the very targetted discounting we do – 10% off our book of the month or something just for the people on our mailing list – but a lot tell us that they’d rather shop here because you get better advice and are more likely to leave with the right book and our ordering service is so fast and that they see us as good value. That might just be our demographic, might be because we’re a children’s bookshop or it might be that people are starting to want value for money more than just being swayed by price. Dunno which, but I’m pleased whichever it is!
